Making the cells talk to each other

Two agents in the grid, both looking at the same problem, and the only thing moving between them is you — copying a paragraph out of one and pasting it into the other. This page is how to stop doing that by hand.

Three things, from smallest to largest:

  What it does
Bring that turn here Copies another cell’s last answer into this one’s input box. You still press Enter.
Exchange Sends this cell’s turn there, waits, brings the answer back. One round trip, automatic.
Round table Passes the turn around a ring of up to five cells until the group says it is done.

All three live in one place: the forum button in a cell’s header.

An agent can never start any of this. It has no tool for it, cannot see the other cells, and cannot join anything. A human ticks the boxes and presses the button, and the browser types the turns in. That is the whole admission control, and it is why the feature needs no MCP server.

Starting a round table

  1. Give the cell you want to open with a completed turn — ask it something and let it answer. That answer is the seed; a cell that has not finished a turn has nothing to pass on.
  2. Press forum in that cell’s header.
  3. Under ROUND TABLE, tick the other terminals that should have a seat. The cap is five seats including the one you started from, so you can tick four.
  4. Pick turns — 4, 6, 10 or 20. This counts submissions, not laps: a table of three with a budget of six comes round twice.
  5. Optionally name a room (see below). Leave it empty for a fresh one.
  6. Press Start.

The menu stays open while it runs, because the two things you want next are in it: stop, and read the conversation.

Only one automation per cell

A cell can run one exchange or one table, not both. Both loops type into terminals and both decide “is this reply mine?” from the tail of what they sent — two at once interleave their writes and each can take the other’s turn as its own answer. So Start refuses while the other one is running.


What each speaker actually sees

From the release after 4.6.0, every turn is written into a room, and the next speaker is handed the conversation so far — not just the previous reply. With three or more seats that difference is the whole point: the third speaker can see what the first argued, not only what the second said back. (On 4.6.0 there is no room, and only the previous reply is handed on.)

Two details are load-bearing:

  • The record is framed as data. A transcript of other agents would otherwise read as instructions addressed to the reader, so the block is labelled a RECORD and says so in words. That is a mitigation, not a boundary the model is forced to respect — the room text goes into the next agent’s prompt as ordinary text, and anything prompt-shaped in it may still be acted on. So treat a room as trusted input: the seats are agents that can read and run things, and the room is writable by anyone who can reach the CLI or the API on this machine.
  • Everyone speaks once before the table can end. ROUND-TABLE-DONE is ignored until the lap is complete, and the framing only mentions the marker once it would be legal to use it. Without that a three-seat table can end on turn 1, before the third cell has said anything.

The window handed on is the last 12 messages or 8,000 characters, whichever comes first, taken from the end. A single post is clipped at 4,000 characters.


Why a table stopped

The cell reports one of these when it finishes:

The room

Everything in this section arrives in the release after 4.6.0 — the room, the name box in the picker, the Rooms view and the command line. On 4.6.0 none of it exists.

A room is the conversation itself, kept apart from the cells having it — one append-only file at ~/.mulmoterminal/rooms/<id>.jsonl. That is what lets the conversation outlive the tab, and what lets things which are not agents take part.

Naming and reuse are one box. In the picker, leave room empty and you get a fresh one (table-2026-08-06-…). Type a name and the table talks there — and if that room already exists, the conversation continues: the seats read the earlier turns back before they speak. So a standup you return to is just a table started on standup again.

A name must be lowercase letters, digits and -, starting with a letter or digit, up to 64 characters. Anything else is refused rather than quietly replaced with a new room.

Reading and joining it yourself

Rooms in the toolbar (the forum icon, beside Pull requests) opens every conversation: rooms on the left, the messages on the right, a box at the bottom to say something yourself. The running table’s own room is one click away — read the conversation in the forum menu.

Posting from that box is not a convenience. The agents are typed into by the runner and can call nothing, so a person joins a conversation from outside — the same door a shell or a CI job uses. Whatever you write is in the window the next speaker reads.

The trash icon beside a room deletes it. A table started with the box empty mints a room every time, so unless you name them the list grows one entry per run — which is what this is for. A named room is reused, and several runs append to it.

Everything after -- is message text, so a post can contain flags without losing them:

It talks to a running MulmoTerminal over loopback (--port if you moved it). --from is a display name and nothing authenticates it — treat it as a label, not an identity.


What it costs

Every turn is a real agent turn on a real account. A five-seat table with a budget of 20 is twenty full turns, each one reading the whole conversation so far. The turn count sits next to the Start button for that reason, and the default is 6.

Two habits that keep it cheap:

  • Start at 4 or 6 turns. You can always start another table on the same room.
  • Ask a question with a decision in it. “Which of these two, and why” converges; “discuss this” spends the budget agreeing.

Limits worth knowing

  • The runner is the browser tab. Close it and the table stops. The room keeps everything said up to that point.
  • Five seats. Beyond that the ring takes so long to come round that the first speaker’s context has moved on by the time it is asked again.
  • One automation per cell — see above.
  • Only agent cells can hold a seat. A shell cell and a command cell have no turns to read.

Try it on something disposable first

Do this once on a scratch project rather than on work you care about — it costs four agent turns and shows you every part of the feature.

  2. Open two cells in that directory, one Claude and one Codex, from the agent picker in each cell’s launcher.

  3. Ask the first cell something with a decision in it, and let it answer:

    Read cache.js. Should get() delete an expired entry, or leave it for a periodic sweep? Two or three sentences, with one concrete reason.

  4. Press forum in that cell, tick the other terminal, set turns to 4, press Start. On 4.6.0 that is the whole picker. From the next release there is also a room box — type try-it into it, so steps 5 and 6 have somewhere to look.

  5. When it ends, the cell says why — most likely The table agreed it was done.

Steps 6 and 7 need the release after 4.6.0.

  1. Watch it. Press watch the conversation in the same menu — or open Rooms from the toolbar and pick try-it.

  2. Join in. Type something into the box at the bottom: “what happens if the sweep never runs?” It lands in the room, and the next seat reads it along with everything else.

If it does not do what you expect

  • “No completed turn to pass on” — the cell you started from has not finished a turn. Ask it something and wait for the answer before pressing Start.
  • No seats offered — the other cells are not readable: a shell cell, a command cell, or one that has not started a session yet.
  • A seat contributed one short line like “I’ll read the files first” — that is a bug in 4.6.0 and earlier: a turn was treated as finished the moment the agent said anything, so an agent that looked at files before answering had only its opening line passed on. Fixed in the release after 4.6.0.
  • The table ended immediately — check the turn budget, and remember it counts submissions rather than laps.

Nothing here is reachable by an agent. The runner reads their turns and writes for them.
